The Five Tenets of Taekwondo

Principles that guide every student, on and off the mat.

01
Ye Ui • 예의

Courtesy

What it means: Showing respect, humility, and good manners to everyone, regardless of age or rank.

In practice: Bowing to instructors and training partners, using polite language, avoiding gossip, and treating others with the same dignity you expect to receive.

02
Yom Chi • 염치

Integrity

What it means: Knowing the difference between right and wrong and having the moral courage to stand by your principles. It is about honesty and being true to yourself.

In practice: Owning up to your mistakes, not cheating or taking shortcuts in training, and choosing the hard right over the easy wrong. A person with integrity doesn't seek false praise or misrepresent their skills.

03
In Nae • 인내

Perseverance

What it means: The determination to keep going despite difficulties, obstacles, or setbacks.

In practice: Pushing through physical fatigue during tough training sessions, practicing a difficult technique hundreds of times until it clicks, and refusing to give up on your goals when progress feels slow.

04
Guk Gi • 극기

Self-Control

What it means: Controlling your physical actions, your emotions, and your thoughts. One of the most vital tenets for a martial artist.

In practice: Controlling the force of your strikes during sparring to ensure your partner's safety, managing anger or frustration when a match doesn't go your way, and staying disciplined outside the gym.

05
Baekjeolbulgul • 백절불굴

Indomitable Spirit

What it means: Having the courage to stand up for what is right, no matter how overwhelming the odds. A spirit that cannot be broken or intimidated by fear.

In practice: Facing a daunting opponent with confidence, standing up against injustice or bullying, and maintaining your convictions even when facing intense pressure to compromise.
